ELICOS in short stands for Australia’s English Language Intensive Courses for Overseas/International Students. ELICOS programs provide international students with a wide variety of options to learn English and improve their English language proficiency to enable students to enter in other education sectors (i.e. Diploma, Bachelors, Post graduate etc.) at all levels.
Often ELICOS courses are taken in sequence with formal courses of study. They are packaged together with one or more courses. Sometimes these further courses are offered at the same institution.
The scale given below shows an approximate guideline. To know the exact ELICOS requirements, please refer to the official website of the universities or the colleges you are applying for. For example, if your overall IELTS score is 5.0 but your writing score is 4.0, you will need 40 (not 30) weeks of ELICOS to enter for diploma and graduate courses.
|Overall IELTS||Approx. Weeks|
|Entry Level||Diploma||Under Graduate||Post Graduate|
|5.5||0||10||10 or 20|
|6||0||0 or 5*||0 or 10*|
Even for students with a band score of 6 in IELTS might be required to take up an ELICOS of 10 weeks to 20 weeks or may be more than that depending on the course and their English language requirements.For example University of Western Sydney requires an overall band score of 6.5 and no less than 6 in each band in all modules i.e. speaking, listening, reading and writing. So if a student scores an overall band score of 6.5 but has scored less than 6 in any of the given modules, the student might be required to attend a few weeks of ELICOS in order to satisfy the English language requirement.
Fee Varies significantly depending on the course duration or institution ranging from $AUD200 – $AUD350 per week.
